Toy Theatre Plays

"All the magic of a West End show in miniature"

Joe invites you to enter the glorious, fantastical and spectacular world of extravagant theatre going.

All six Paperplays shows are completely different with magnificent settings, brilliant lighting effects and witty scripts. Joe’s ability to transform his voice from character to character is a hallmark of these productions.

What is Toy Theatre?

Joe Gladwin’s Paperplays miniature theatre is based on the British and European concept of ‘toy theatre’. Between the Regency and late Victorian era plays performed on the London stage were reproduced on engraved theatre sheets which could then be bought, cut out, coloured, assembled and performed at home. These sheets contained images of the scenery, actors and theatre front, as well as a reduced text. This fashionable pass–time was especially popular in Northern Europe and throughout the nineteenth century.

It is still possible to buy these theatres today and a growing number of enthusiasts around the world are reviving this unusual form of performing art, which has been the inspiration for many famous actors and theatre practitioners.

Joe Gladwin is one of a few professional performers of toy theatre. He travels widely promoting this unique and exciting art form. All the productions are designed and manufactured by him and performed and voiced live.

Technical information

A Paperplays Toy Theatre production is best played on the same level as the audience (not on a stage). Seating needs to be straight on but not raked. Joe requires a clear, flat space that is 3 metres wide x 3 metres deep on which to perform, a room that can be darkened with either blinds or curtains and access to a 13 amp power socket. A Toy Theatre production can play to an intimate audience of no more than 40 people, unless otherwise stated, and Joe requires 1 hour to set up and break down the show.
