About Joe Gladwin
Joe Gladwin began his theatrical career in 1973. An interest in animation led him to work and subsequently train with the late Barry Smith, an acknowledged master in the field of puppetry arts. After several years he left Barry’s company and set up on his own traveling across the world, eventually finding his way to Australia where he remained for 14 years.
During his time in Australia, Joe built a reputation as a solo puppeteer and puppet theatre director. He also built puppets for theatre companies and in particular enjoyed several seasons with the creative teams at Sydney Dance Company and The Marionette Theatre Of Australia. He travelled and performed extensively in Australia and South East Asia. Joe was also a recipient of two major Australia Council Awards.
In 1990 Joe returned to Britain and has divided his time between teaching puppetry, directing and making his own productions.
The creation of Joe’s Paperplays Miniature Theatre began in 1997 with his production of Dracula followed by Cinderella, Beauty & the Beast, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Blue Beard and most recently Dick Whittington. The Hound of the Baskervilles has original music composed for the production by Helen Porter through a grant awarded by South West Arts. Joe collaborated with Helen Porter’s Counterparts Company in Holland making puppets and training the actors for a new production of Scrooge, a story of Christmas.
He was puppetry Director for The Peach Child at The Little Angel Theatre in London in 2001 and the subject of a 30 minute life style programme, Eikoku Seikatsu for Fuji Television in 2002.
Joe Gladwin's Paperplays Miniature Theatre has been invited to festivals in Germany, Holland, France and USA.
Joe Gladwin and his Paperplays Puppet Theatre was unexpectedly awarded the “Presidents Plate” by Peter Baldwin, the President of The British Puppet & Model Theatre Guild, in recognition of his services to puppetry and in particular, Toy Theatre performances. This exciting award was made in June 2005.
